What date does the Virus Definitions date refer to?
SUMMARY
The "Protection" tab section of Security Response writeups displays the date that virus definitions were first created. In some cases, the date of "Virus definitions (Intelligent Updater)" will be different than that of the "Virus definitions (LiveUpdate)."
During other times, they will be the same, as shown here:
In either case, the definitions date here is the date on which the first virus definitions for this threat was added to the certified definitions.
Virus writers often use the source code for a known threat, and either recompile it or make a slight change to it. In some instances, the change is enough that the current definition will no longer detect the file. When this occurs, a new detection is added to the existing definition file. The threat remains the same and the dates that are displayed in the "Protection" section do not change.
However, the date of the virus definitions that are required to detect the updated or modified threat may be later than that shown in the writeup.
