SUMMARY

Behavior

Spyware.Spytech monitors files, network traffic, and keystrokes. This Spyware gives the person who installed it a Web-based interface with summaries of logged information on the host computer.

TECHNICAL DETAILS

When Spyware.Spytech is executed, it does the following:

1. Copies itself as C:Program Filessvchost.exe.
   
   
2. Adds the value:
   
   "Srv32Win" = "C:Program Filessvchost.exe"
   
   to the registry key:
   
   HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRun
   
   
3. Monitors the following items:
   
   • Keystrokes typed
   • Website visits
   • Applications run
   • Internet connections made
   • Files and documents viewed
   • Chat conversations
   • Windows opened
   • Outgoing email and webmail
     
     
4. Downloads updates from www.spytech-web.com.

Note: Removing this adware component from the system will likely cause the program that installed it to not function as intended. The uninstaller generally identifies the programs that will not work after uninstallation.

The following instructions pertain to all Symantec antivirus products that support Security Risk detection.

1. Update the definitions.
2. Run a full system scan and delete all the files detected as Spyware.Spytech.
3. Delete the value that was added to the registry.
   

For specific details on each of these steps, read the following instructions.

1. Updating the definitions
To obtain the most recent definitions, start your Symantec program and run LiveUpdate.

2. Scanning for and deleting the files

1. Start Norton AntiVirus and make sure that it is configured to scan all the files. For more information on how to do this, read the document "How to configure Norton AntiVirus to scan all files."
2. Run a full system scan.
3. If any files are detected as Spyware.Spytech, click Delete.
   

3. Deleting the value from the registry

1. Click Start, and then click Run. (The Run dialog box appears.)
2. Type regedit
   
   Then click OK. (The Registry Editor opens.)
   
   
3. Navigate to the key:
   
   HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRun
   
   
4. In the right pane, delete the value:
   
   "Srv32Win" = "C:Program Filessvchost.exe"
   
   
5. Exit the Registry Editor.
