TECHNICAL DETAILS


When Spyware.SilentSpy runs, it performs the following actions:
  1. Adds the value:

    "SSConfig" = "SW.exe"

    to the registry key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRun

    so that the spyware runs when you start Windows.

  2. Adds the subkey:

    "SW"

    to the registry keys:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftware

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINECurrentControlSetEnum

  3. Adds the value:

    "0" = "SW{B7EAFDC0-A680-11D0-96d8-00AA0051E51D}{9B365890-165F-11D0-A195-0020AFD156E4}"

    to the registry key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINECurrentControlSetServiceskmixerEnum

  4. Creates the following files:
    • C:Silent-Spy.cnt
    • C:Silent-Spy.hlp
    • C:Wlp.sys
    • C:Wlg.sys
    • C:SW.htm

  5. Creates the folder C:SSS, which stores screenshots that the spyware captures.

  6. Captures and logs the following items:
    • Every window that you open and interacted with.
    • All of the Web site titles and addresses that you visit.
    • All the keystrokes and windows in which the keystrokes were entered.
    • Periodic screen shots.



REMOVAL


The following instructions pertain to all Symantec antivirus products that support Security Risk detection.
  1. Update the definitions.
  2. Delete the subkeys and values that were added to the registry.
  3. Run a full system scan and delete all the files detected as Spyware.SilentSpy. Manually delete the files that the spyware created.

For specific details on each of these steps, read the following instructions.

1. To update the definitions
To obtain the most recent definitions, start your Symantec program and run LiveUpdate.

2. To delete the subkeys and values from the registry

WARNING: Symantec strongly recommends that you back up the registry before making any changes to it. Incorrect changes to the registry can result in permanent data loss or corrupted files. Modify the specified keys only. Read the document, "How to make a backup of the Windows registry," for instructions.
  1. Click Start > Run. (The Run dialog box appears.)
  2. Type regedit

    Then click OK. (The Registry Editor opens.)

  3. Navigate to the key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRun
    In the right pane, delete the value:

    "SSConfig" = "SW.exe"

e. Navigate to the key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftware

    In the left pane, delete the subkey:

    "SW"

f. Navigate to the key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESystemCurrentControlSetEnum

    In the left pane, delete the subkey:

    "SW"

g. Navigate to the key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESystemCurrentControlSetServiceskmixerEnum

    In the right pane, delete the value:

    "0" = "SW{B7EAFDC0-A680-11D0-96d8-00AA0051E51D}{9B365890-165F-11D0-A195-0020AFD156E4}"

h. Exit the Registry Editor.


i. Restart the computer.

3. To scan for and delete the files
  1. Start your Symantec antivirus program, and then run a full system scan.
  2. If any files are detected as Spyware.SilentSpy, click Delete.

    Note: If your Symantec antivirus product reports that it cannot delete a detected file, write down the path and file name. Then use Windows Explorer to locate and delete the file.
  3. Using Windows Explorer, delete the following files if they exist:
    • C:Silent-Spy.cnt
    • C:Silent-Spy.hlp
    • C:Wlp.sys
    • C:Wlg.sys
    • C:SW.htm

d. Using Windows Explorer, delete the C:SSS folder if it exists.
